During the 1940s it was common practice for female cleaners to be employed on the railways in this ( model released ) image a lady cleaner takes break from cleaning '5101' class 2-6-2T 'large prairie' locomotive No 4144 built in 1946 in early British Railways livery at Didcot Railway Centre a working heritage rail museum.
Based around the original Great Western Railway Engine Shed built in 1932, the centre also features a Coal Stage, a working 70 foot turntable, and modern locomotive works, among many fascinating buildings including the Great Western Trust museum.
